UBC was LOUD in celebrating their LAST DAY OF CLASSES at this year’s AMS 18th Annual Block Party!

A long-time UBC tradition took place last Friday, April 10th. The AMS’s Block Party took over the Nest Plaza with headliner Loud Luxury and other acts, including internet sensation DJ Mandy, DJ and Producer Wes Mills, and UBC’s very own UBC Electronica. The night called for a full celebration of UBC’s last day of classes, bringing in thousands of students to the biggest university music festival in Western Canada. Nothing beats closing the academic year with awesome music, yummy food trucks, and a crowd that knows how to party.

The event kicked off at 6 PM with UBC Electronica (UBCE) taking the stage. Although students were still in the midst of finishing their classes, UBCE knew how to bring the energy to start off strong. Their stage presence was energetic, welcoming, and all in all hype, bringing some killer electronic tunes to the event. Their DJ set marked the bar for the event, even initiating dance moves from people in neighbouring buildings. Following the lineup, Wes Mills took over the stage with his infectious beats and party tunes. Playing his set the same day he released his latest EP, “Used To Be Fun”, Wes Mills had some new tunes up his sleeve for UBC students to enjoy. His set moved seamlessly between house, hip-hop, and funk, each track more fluid than the last. The most striking part wasn’t the production, but how present everyone felt. Barely any phones were up. Looking through the crowd, there was just people dancing together, in the moment. This is a rare feat for this day and age, and is something that truly only a few artists can master.

The crowd grew bigger and bigger as the night went on, and the audience soon welcomed the one and only DJ Mandy. She started her DJ career on TikTok as a simple curiosity, mixing some of the most random sounds and songs for comedic purposes, but quickly grew in fame as she was known to be the only DJ who could mix water with oil. The audience grew loud as she cooked up some impressive beats, and as the night got darker, the stage got brighter. The stage production was incredible, with CO2 jets, alternating stage lights, and some vibey background visuals. DJ Mandy knew how to control the crowd, emphasizing her talent by creating a catchy bass for all to dance to. She made sure to perform her most recent single, “And That Is House”, and her other track, “Funk U Want”.

No one was prepared for Loud Luxury’s sick entrance, hyping up the crowd, CO2 jets on full blast, and bright lights making them truly loud and luxurious. The Canadian duo, Andrew Fedyk and Joe De Pace, had everyone losing their minds. The heavy drum and bass could be felt within everyone’s body, with those at the barricade feeling the good vibration. Audience members quickly got into the vibe and started mounting friends on their shoulders to reciprocate the energy back to the pair. Loud Luxury also made sure to interact with the crowd, with Joe and Andrew coming down to the pit area, signing the fans' photos, flags, and even snagging a couple of selfies. Joe even brought out a goose figure with what appeared to be all of the passes from their previous music festivals. A guest appearance was made by DR. FRESCH, who did not disappoint by adding more bass to the mix. The DJ duo performed some of their most famous songs, such as “R U DOWN?”, “If Only I”, “The Fate of Ophelia Remix”, and of course their most nostalgic song “Body”. To the crowd’s surprise, Loud Luxury played some awesome remixes of popular songs, like “Ribs” by Lorde, that only made the crowd go wilder. The energy was so high that the duo stated to “not tell Western, but UBC changed the rankings” for knowing how to party.

Loud Luxury closed off the night with one more song after being chanted for an encore, and even though the event ended, Loud Luxury continued the night at Celebrities Nightclub for the official afterparty.
